Overview
Most adrenal tumours are benign. Adrenal cancer is rare and can produce excess hormones such as cortisol, aldosterone or androgens, which cause noticeable symptoms.
Symptoms
- Weight gain, a round face and high blood pressure from excess cortisol
- Excess facial or body hair, or voice changes in women
- Muscle weakness and low potassium
- Pain or a feeling of fullness in the abdomen or back
Causes and risk factors
The cause is usually unknown. Some inherited syndromes, such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome, increase the risk.
Diagnosis
Blood and urine tests check hormone levels. CT or MRI scans show the size and features of the tumour.
Treatment
Surgery to remove the adrenal gland and tumour is the main treatment. Medicines that block hormone production, chemotherapy or radiotherapy may also be used.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for unexplained weight gain with high blood pressure, new excess hair growth, or a lump or pain in the abdomen.
