Overview
Amblyopia is the most common cause of reduced vision in one eye in children. It is best treated early, ideally before the age of seven, while the visual system is still developing.
Symptoms
- Poor vision in one eye
- An eye that wanders inwards or outwards (squint)
- Poor depth perception
- Squinting, tilting the head or closing one eye to see
Causes and risk factors
Causes include a squint (strabismus), a large difference in focusing power between the eyes, and anything that blocks vision in early childhood, such as a cataract or drooping eyelid. Premature birth and family history increase the risk.
Diagnosis
It is detected through vision screening and a full eye examination by an eye specialist.
Treatment
Treatment includes glasses, patching the stronger eye or using eye drops to blur it, so that the weaker eye is used more. Any underlying cause, such as a cataract, is treated.
When to see a doctor
Have your child's eyes checked if you notice a wandering eye, head tilting or poor vision. Early treatment gives the best results. KIH can guide you to an eye specialist.
