Overview
In annular pancreas, part of the pancreas forms a ring around the duodenum. This can narrow or block the intestine. It may cause problems in newborns or remain unnoticed until adulthood.
Symptoms
- Vomiting in newborns, sometimes green (bilious)
- Poor feeding and weight gain
- In adults, upper abdominal pain, fullness after eating, nausea or pancreatitis
Causes and risk factors
It results from abnormal development of the pancreas before birth. It is more common in babies with Down syndrome and other bowel abnormalities.
Diagnosis
X-rays, ultrasound, CT or MRI scans show the blockage and the ring of pancreatic tissue.
Treatment
If the intestine is blocked, surgery is done to bypass the narrowed area. People without symptoms may not need treatment.
When to see a doctor
Seek urgent care for a newborn who is vomiting repeatedly, especially green vomit, or not feeding.
