Overview
Arachnoid cysts are usually present from birth and are often found by chance on a brain scan. Most are small, cause no symptoms and never need treatment.
Symptoms
- Usually none
- Headache
- Seizures
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Developmental delay or an enlarged head in children with large cysts
Causes and risk factors
Most are congenital, forming during development before birth. Some develop after head injury, infection or surgery.
Diagnosis
CT or MRI scans of the brain or spine show the cyst.
Treatment
Cysts without symptoms are usually monitored. Cysts causing symptoms can be treated with surgery to drain or open the cyst, sometimes using an endoscope or a shunt.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for persistent headaches, seizures, or developmental concerns in a child. Seek urgent care for severe headache with vomiting or drowsiness.
