Overview
In an atrioventricular canal defect, blood mixes between the heart chambers and extra blood flows to the lungs. Complete defects usually need surgery in the first months of life.
Symptoms
- Fast breathing and breathlessness in babies
- Poor feeding and slow weight gain
- Sweating during feeds
- Tiredness
- A heart murmur
Causes and risk factors
It develops before birth and is much more common in babies with Down syndrome.
Diagnosis
It may be seen on a pregnancy scan. After birth, an echocardiogram confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Medicines can help control symptoms before surgery. Open-heart surgery closes the holes and repairs the valves. Lifelong follow-up with a heart specialist is needed.
When to see a doctor
