ADHD tends to run in families. Other risk factors include premature birth, low birth weight and exposure to smoking or alcohol during pregnancy.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by a specialist after a detailed assessment, including information from parents, teachers or partners, and ruling out other causes.
Treatment
Treatment may include behavioural therapy, parent training, educational support and medicines. A combination often works best.
