Overview
Bladder dysfunction is common and can affect people of any age. It can significantly affect quality of life but usually improves with treatment.
Symptoms
- Sudden, strong urges to pass urine
- Passing urine very often, including at night
- Leaking urine
- Weak stream or difficulty emptying the bladder
- Repeated urinary infections
Causes and risk factors
Causes include an overactive bladder muscle, nerve damage from diabetes, stroke, spinal cord problems or multiple sclerosis, an enlarged prostate, weak pelvic floor muscles and some medicines.
Diagnosis
Assessment includes a history, bladder diary, urine tests, ultrasound to check emptying and sometimes urodynamic tests.
Treatment
Treatment includes bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, reducing caffeine, medicines, catheters for poor emptying, Botox injections into the bladder or surgery in selected cases.
