Overview

Blepharitis is common and usually affects both eyes. It is often long-lasting but can be controlled well with regular eyelid care.

Symptoms

  • Red, swollen or itchy eyelid margins
  • Crusts or flakes on the eyelashes, especially in the morning
  • Gritty, burning or watery eyes
  • Eyelids sticking together on waking

Causes and risk factors

It is linked to bacteria on the eyelids, blocked oil glands, dandruff (seborrhoeic dermatitis), rosacea and allergies.

Diagnosis

An eye specialist diagnoses it by examining the eyelids and eyelashes.

Treatment

Treatment includes warm compresses and daily cleaning of the eyelid margins. Antibiotic ointments, lubricating drops or tablets may be needed for persistent cases.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if symptoms continue despite eyelid hygiene, or if you have eye pain or changes in vision. KIH can guide you to an eye specialist.
