Overview

Blepharospasm is a form of dystonia, a movement disorder. In severe cases, the eyelids may close for long periods, interfering with reading, driving and daily activities.

Symptoms

  • Increased blinking
  • Eye irritation and sensitivity to light
  • Involuntary squeezing or closing of the eyelids
  • Symptoms that worsen with stress, bright light or tiredness

Causes and risk factors

The cause is not fully understood but involves the brain's movement control centres. It is more common in women and people over 50.

Diagnosis

A neurologist or eye specialist diagnoses it from the symptoms and an examination, after ruling out eye causes such as dry eye.

Treatment

Botulinum toxin (Botox) injections into the eyelid muscles are the main treatment and work well for most people. Medicines, tinted glasses and, rarely, surgery may also help.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if eyelid twitching or closing lasts for weeks or interferes with your vision and daily life.
