Overview
Body dysmorphic disorder causes intense distress and can affect work, school and relationships. It is treatable with therapy and medicine.
Symptoms
- Constant worry about one or more parts of the body
- Checking mirrors often or avoiding them completely
- Comparing appearance with others
- Seeking reassurance or cosmetic procedures repeatedly
- Avoiding social situations
Causes and risk factors
It is thought to involve a mix of genetic, brain and environmental factors. Bullying, teasing, low self-esteem and anxiety or depression increase the risk.
Diagnosis
A mental health professional diagnoses it through an assessment of symptoms and how they affect daily life.
Treatment
Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and certain antidepressant medicines are effective. Cosmetic surgery does not usually relieve the distress.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if worries about appearance take up a lot of time or cause distress. Seek urgent help if there are thoughts of self-harm.
