Overview
Bowel obstruction is a medical emergency. Without treatment, the blocked part of the bowel can lose its blood supply and become damaged.
Symptoms
- Cramping abdominal pain
- Swollen, bloated abdomen
- Vomiting
- Not passing stools or wind
- Loss of appetite
Causes and risk factors
Common causes include scar tissue (adhesions) from previous surgery, hernias, tumours, twisting of the bowel and inflammatory bowel disease.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination, X-rays and a CT scan of the abdomen.
Treatment
Treatment in hospital includes fluids through a drip, resting the bowel and a tube through the nose to relieve pressure. Many cases need surgery to remove the blockage.
When to see a doctor
Seek emergency care for severe abdominal pain with vomiting, a swollen abdomen, or not passing stools or wind.
