Overview
A brain abscess is a serious condition that needs urgent treatment. It usually develops from an infection elsewhere in the body that spreads to the brain.
Symptoms
- Headache that gets worse over time
- Fever
- Confusion or drowsiness
- Weakness on one side of the body
- Seizures, nausea and vomiting
Causes and risk factors
Infections can spread from the ears, sinuses or teeth, from the bloodstream, or after a head injury or brain surgery. A weakened immune system and some heart defects increase the risk.
Diagnosis
A CT or MRI scan of the brain shows the abscess. Blood tests and samples from the abscess identify the infection.
Treatment
Treatment is with antibiotics for several weeks, often combined with surgery to drain the abscess.
