Overview
Bronchopulmonary dysplasia happens when a premature baby's developing lungs are damaged. Most babies improve as their lungs grow, though some have breathing problems in early childhood.
Signs
- Fast or difficult breathing
- Needing extra oxygen beyond the expected time
- Wheezing
- Poor feeding and slow weight gain
Causes and risk factors
The main risk factors are being born very early, low birth weight and needing a ventilator or oxygen for a long time. Infections can also contribute.
Diagnosis
It is diagnosed when a premature baby still needs oxygen at a certain age after birth. Chest X-rays help assess the lungs.
Treatment
Treatment includes oxygen, breathing support, good nutrition, and sometimes medicines such as diuretics or inhalers. Babies need follow-up and protection from respiratory infections.
When to see a doctor
Babies with this condition need regular follow-up. Seek urgent care if a baby is breathing fast, struggling to breathe or turning blue.
