Overview
Bruxism is common and often happens during sleep without the person knowing. Over time it can wear down teeth and cause jaw pain.
Symptoms
- Grinding sounds during sleep, noticed by others
- Worn, flattened, chipped or sensitive teeth
- Jaw pain, tightness or clicking
- Headaches, especially in the morning
- Earache-like pain
Causes and risk factors
It is linked to stress, anxiety, sleep problems such as sleep apnoea, caffeine, alcohol, smoking and certain medicines.
Diagnosis
A dentist diagnoses bruxism by looking for tooth wear and asking about symptoms.
Treatment
A custom night guard protects the teeth. Managing stress, reducing caffeine and alcohol, and treating sleep problems help. Damaged teeth can be repaired.
