Overview
Bulimia nervosa is a serious mental health condition. People with bulimia are often within a normal weight range, so the condition can be hidden. It is treatable.
Symptoms
- Repeated episodes of binge eating with a sense of loss of control
- Making oneself vomit or misusing laxatives
- Excessive exercise or fasting
- Preoccupation with body shape and weight
- Sore throat, damaged teeth and swollen cheeks
Causes and risk factors
It results from a combination of genetic, psychological and social factors. Dieting, low self-esteem, anxiety and depression increase the risk.
Diagnosis
A doctor or mental health professional makes the diagnosis. Blood tests check for complications such as low potassium.
Treatment
Cognitive behavioural therapy is the main treatment. Nutritional counselling and antidepressant medicines may also help.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you or someone you know is binge eating and purging. Seek urgent care for fainting, irregular heartbeat or severe weakness.
