Overview
Bursitis most often affects the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee. It usually improves with rest and simple treatment.
Symptoms
- Pain and tenderness around a joint
- Swelling
- Pain that worsens with movement or pressure
- Redness and warmth if infected
Causes and risk factors
It is often caused by repetitive movements, prolonged pressure such as kneeling, injury, gout or rheumatoid arthritis. Infection can also cause bursitis.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination. Ultrasound, X-rays or testing fluid from the bursa may be needed.
Treatment
Treatment includes rest, ice, pain relief and physiotherapy. Steroid injections can help. Infected bursitis needs antibiotics and sometimes drainage.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if pain lasts more than a couple of weeks. Seek prompt care for fever, redness and severe swelling.
