Overview

Canker sores are very common. They typically heal within one to two weeks, but some people get them repeatedly.

Symptoms

  • Small, round sores with a white or yellow centre and red edge
  • Pain, especially when eating or drinking
  • Sores on the inside of the cheeks, lips, tongue or gums

Causes and risk factors

Triggers include minor mouth injuries, stress, hormonal changes, certain foods and low levels of iron, vitamin B12 or folate. Recurrent ulcers can be linked to coeliac disease or inflammatory bowel disease.

Diagnosis

A doctor or dentist diagnoses them by examining the mouth. Blood tests may be done for frequent ulcers.

Treatment

Most heal without treatment. Mouth rinses, gels and pain relief can ease discomfort. Any underlying deficiency is treated.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor or dentist if an ulcer lasts more than three weeks, is unusually large or keeps coming back.
