Overview
Carbuncles are deeper and more serious than single boils. They are usually caused by bacteria and often need medical treatment.
Symptoms
- A painful, red, swollen lump that grows over days
- Several pus-filled heads
- Fever and feeling unwell
- Common on the back of the neck, shoulders and thighs
Causes and risk factors
They are usually caused by Staphylococcus bacteria. Diabetes, a weakened immune system, poor hygiene and friction from clothing increase the risk.
Diagnosis
A doctor diagnoses a carbuncle by examination. A swab may be taken to identify the bacteria.
Treatment
Treatment may include warm compresses, drainage of the pus by a doctor, and antibiotics. Blood sugar should be checked in people with recurrent infections.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for a carbuncle, a boil that does not improve, or repeated boils. Seek urgent care for fever or spreading redness.
