Overview
Cataracts are a common cause of poor vision, especially in older adults. They are treated with safe and effective surgery.
Symptoms
- Cloudy, blurred or dim vision
- Difficulty seeing at night
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Seeing halos around lights
- Faded colours and frequent changes in glasses
Causes and risk factors
Most cataracts are related to ageing. Other risk factors include diabetes, smoking, long-term steroid use, eye injury and too much sunlight.
Diagnosis
An eye specialist diagnoses cataracts with a full eye examination.
Treatment
In the early stages, stronger glasses and better lighting may help. When cataracts affect daily life, surgery replaces the cloudy lens with an artificial one.
