Overview
Tooth decay is one of the most common health problems. Untreated cavities can grow larger and lead to pain, infection and tooth loss. Regular dental care prevents most of them.
Symptoms
- Toothache or sensitivity to sweet, hot or cold food and drinks
- Visible holes or dark spots on teeth
- Pain when biting
- Bad breath
Causes and risk factors
Bacteria in plaque turn sugars into acids that damage tooth enamel. Risk factors include frequent sugary snacks and drinks, poor brushing, dry mouth and not getting enough fluoride.
Diagnosis
A dentist finds cavities during a check-up, sometimes with dental X-rays.
Treatment
Treatment includes fillings, crowns, root canal treatment for deep decay or, if needed, removal of the tooth. Fluoride treatment can help early decay.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist for regular check-ups and whenever you have tooth pain or sensitivity.
