Overview
Central cord syndrome is the most common type of incomplete spinal cord injury. Many people recover some or most of their function over time with rehabilitation.
Symptoms
- Weakness in the arms and hands, more than in the legs
- Numbness, tingling or burning pain in the arms
- Difficulty with fine hand movements
- Bladder problems in some cases
Causes and risk factors
It often follows a fall or injury that bends the neck backwards, particularly in older adults with existing narrowing of the spinal canal from arthritis.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a neurological examination and MRI of the neck.
Treatment
Treatment includes immobilising the neck, close monitoring and intensive rehabilitation. Surgery may be needed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
When to see a doctor
Seek emergency care after a neck injury, especially with weakness, numbness or tingling in the arms.
