Overview
Cervical radiculopathy happens when a nerve root leaving the spine in the neck is pinched. Most people improve with non-surgical treatment.
Symptoms
- Pain spreading from the neck into the shoulder, arm or hand
- Numbness or tingling in the arm or fingers
- Weakness in the arm or hand
- Pain that worsens with certain neck movements
Causes and risk factors
Common causes are a slipped (herniated) disc and age-related changes in the spine, such as bone spurs. Injury can also be a cause.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a neurological examination and MRI of the neck. Nerve conduction tests may be used.
Treatment
Treatment includes pain relief, physiotherapy, posture correction and sometimes steroid injections. Surgery may be needed if symptoms do not improve or weakness worsens.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for arm pain or numbness that lasts more than a few weeks. Seek urgent care for increasing weakness, difficulty walking or loss of bladder control.
