Overview
Cervicitis is often caused by an infection, including some sexually transmitted infections. It may cause no symptoms, so it is sometimes found during a routine examination.
Symptoms
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
- Pain during sex
- Pelvic pain or pain when passing urine
Causes and risk factors
Causes include sexually transmitted infections such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, bacterial vaginosis, allergies to products like spermicides, and irritation from devices.
Diagnosis
A doctor performs a pelvic examination and takes swabs to test for infection.
Treatment
Infections are treated with antibiotics or antiviral medicines. Partners may also need treatment. Avoiding irritants helps non-infectious cervicitis.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if you have unusual discharge, bleeding after sex or pelvic pain.
