Overview
Childhood disintegrative disorder is now considered part of autism spectrum disorder. After normal early development, a child loses skills such as language, social skills and toilet training.
Signs
- Loss of language and communication skills
- Loss of social and play skills
- Loss of bladder or bowel control
- Loss of motor skills
- Repetitive behaviours
Causes and risk factors
The cause is not known. It may be linked to changes in brain development.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is made by specialists after a full developmental assessment and tests to rule out other neurological causes, such as seizures or metabolic disorders.
Treatment
There is no cure, but early behavioural therapy, speech and occupational therapy, and educational support can help. Medicines may help some behaviours.
