Overview
A cholesteatoma slowly grows and can erode the small bones of hearing and nearby structures. It usually needs surgery.
Symptoms
- Smelly discharge from one ear
- Gradual hearing loss in one ear
- A feeling of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Dizziness or facial weakness in advanced cases
Causes and risk factors
It is usually linked to repeated ear infections or poor function of the tube that connects the ear to the back of the nose. Some people are born with it.
Diagnosis
An ENT specialist examines the ear with a microscope. A hearing test and CT scan help plan treatment.
Treatment
Surgery is the main treatment to remove the cholesteatoma and protect hearing. Regular follow-up is needed as it can come back.
When to see a doctor
See an ENT specialist for ongoing discharge from one ear or hearing loss. Seek urgent care for severe headache, dizziness or facial weakness with ear problems.
