Overview
Chondroblastoma most often affects the knee, hip or shoulder. It is benign but can damage the bone and nearby joint, so it is usually removed.
Symptoms
- Pain near a joint, often worse with activity
- Swelling or tenderness
- Limping or reduced joint movement
Causes and risk factors
The cause is unknown. It most commonly occurs between the ages of 10 and 25.
Diagnosis
X-rays and MRI show the tumour. A biopsy confirms the diagnosis.
Treatment
Treatment is surgery to scrape out the tumour (curettage), often filling the space with a bone graft. Follow-up checks for recurrence.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for persistent bone or joint pain in a child or young adult, especially pain at night or with swelling.
