Overview

Chronic fatigue syndrome can severely affect daily life. Its cause is not fully understood, but symptoms can be managed with a tailored plan.

Symptoms

  • Extreme tiredness lasting six months or more
  • Worsening of symptoms after physical or mental effort
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Problems with memory and concentration
  • Muscle or joint pain, headaches and dizziness on standing

Causes and risk factors

It may follow a viral infection, and immune, hormonal and genetic factors may play a role.

Diagnosis

There is no single test. Diagnosis is based on symptoms after blood tests rule out other causes such as anaemia, thyroid problems and depression.

Treatment

Treatment focuses on managing energy levels (pacing), improving sleep, managing pain and supporting mental health. Activity is increased gradually and carefully.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if tiredness lasts for weeks and affects your daily life.
