Overview
CLL mainly affects older adults. It often grows slowly and many people do not need treatment for years, only regular monitoring.
Symptoms
- Often no symptoms, found on a routine blood test
- Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpits or groin
- Tiredness
- Frequent infections
- Night sweats, fever and weight loss
Causes and risk factors
The cause is unknown. Risk increases with age, and a family history of CLL increases the risk.
Diagnosis
A full blood count and a special blood test (flow cytometry) confirm it. Further tests help assess the stage and guide treatment.
Treatment
Early CLL is monitored. Treatment, when needed, includes targeted medicines, immunotherapy and chemotherapy.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for swollen glands that do not go away, frequent infections, night sweats or unexplained weight loss.
