Overview
CML is caused by a genetic change in the blood-forming cells called the Philadelphia chromosome. Modern targeted medicines control the disease very well for most people.
Symptoms
- Often no symptoms at first
- Tiredness and weakness
- Feeling full or pain under the left ribs from an enlarged spleen
- Night sweats and weight loss
- Easy bruising or bleeding
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by an acquired genetic change, not inherited. High-dose radiation exposure increases the risk.
Diagnosis
Blood tests, a bone marrow test and genetic tests that detect the BCR-ABL gene confirm the diagnosis.
Treatment
Daily tablets called tyrosine kinase inhibitors are the main treatment. Regular blood tests monitor the response. Stem cell transplant is used in some cases.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for ongoing tiredness, a feeling of fullness in the left upper abdomen, or unexplained weight loss.
