Overview
In chronic pancreatitis, the pancreas is gradually scarred. This can cause ongoing pain, poor absorption of food and diabetes.
Symptoms
- Ongoing or recurring pain in the upper abdomen, often spreading to the back
- Weight loss
- Oily, pale, foul-smelling stools
- Nausea
- Symptoms of diabetes such as thirst and frequent urination
Causes and risk factors
The most common cause is long-term heavy alcohol use. Others include smoking, repeated attacks of acute pancreatitis, genetic factors and blockage of the pancreatic duct.
Diagnosis
Tests include blood and stool tests, CT, MRI and endoscopic ultrasound.
Treatment
Treatment includes stopping alcohol and smoking, pain relief, enzyme capsules taken with meals, managing diabetes and a healthy diet. Endoscopic procedures or surgery may be needed for blockages or severe pain.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for recurring upper abdominal pain, oily stools or weight loss. Seek urgent care for severe pain with vomiting.
