Overview

Chronic venous disease ranges from spider veins and varicose veins to leg swelling, skin changes and ulcers. Treatment can relieve symptoms and prevent complications.

Symptoms

  • Aching, heavy or tired legs
  • Swelling of the ankles
  • Varicose veins
  • Itching and skin discolouration
  • Leg ulcers near the ankle

Causes and risk factors

Risk factors include older age, family history, pregnancy, obesity, standing for long periods and previous deep vein thrombosis.

Diagnosis

A Doppler ultrasound shows the flow in the veins.

Treatment

Treatment includes compression stockings, leg elevation, exercise, weight loss and procedures such as endovenous ablation or surgery.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor for leg swelling, skin changes or ulcers. Seek urgent care for a painful, swollen leg, which may be a blood clot.
