Overview
Cold sores are common and contagious. After the first infection, the virus stays in the body and can cause repeat outbreaks.
Symptoms
- Tingling, itching or burning on the lip before blisters appear
- Small, fluid-filled blisters that burst and crust over
- Healing within 7 to 10 days
Causes and risk factors
They are caused by herpes simplex virus type 1, spread through close contact such as kissing. Outbreaks can be triggered by stress, illness, sunlight, tiredness and periods.
Diagnosis
A doctor usually diagnoses cold sores from their appearance.
Treatment
Most heal on their own. Antiviral creams or tablets can shorten outbreaks if started early. Avoid kissing and sharing items while sores are present.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if sores are severe, last more than two weeks, spread to the eyes, occur in a newborn, or if you have a weakened immune system.
