Overview
Combined hyperlipidaemia often runs in families and usually causes no symptoms. It is found with a blood test and is important to treat to protect the heart and blood vessels.
Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms
- Sometimes found after a heart attack or stroke
- Very high triglycerides can occasionally cause pancreatitis
Causes and risk factors
It is often inherited. Obesity, diabetes, an unhealthy diet, inactivity, alcohol and an underactive thyroid can make it worse.
Diagnosis
A fasting lipid profile blood test measures cholesterol and triglycerides. Other family members may also need testing.
Treatment
Treatment includes a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, weight loss, limiting alcohol and medicines such as statins and other lipid-lowering drugs.
When to see a doctor
Have your cholesterol checked regularly, especially if you have a family history of high cholesterol or early heart disease.
