Overview
Most people recover from a concussion within a few weeks. Rest and a gradual return to activity help recovery.
Symptoms
- Headache
- Confusion or feeling dazed
- Dizziness or balance problems
- Nausea or vomiting
- Memory problems, tiredness, irritability and sensitivity to light or noise
Causes and risk factors
Concussion is caused by falls, road accidents, sports injuries and assaults.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the person and checks memory, balance and nerve function. A CT scan is done if there are warning signs of a more serious injury.
Treatment
Treatment involves physical and mental rest for a day or two, followed by a gradual return to normal activities, school and sport. Avoid alcohol and driving until recovered.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor after any head injury with symptoms. Seek emergency care for loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, a worsening headache, seizures, confusion, weakness or clear fluid from the nose or ears.
