Overview
Conjunctivitis is very common. It can be caused by infection or allergy. Infective conjunctivitis spreads easily but usually clears up on its own.
Symptoms
- Red or pink eye
- Watery or sticky discharge
- Itching, burning or a gritty feeling
- Crusting of the eyelids, especially in the morning
Causes and risk factors
Causes include viruses, bacteria, allergies such as pollen or dust, and irritants like smoke or chlorine.
Diagnosis
A doctor usually diagnoses it from the symptoms and an eye examination.
Treatment
Viral conjunctivitis improves on its own. Bacterial conjunctivitis may need antibiotic drops. Allergic conjunctivitis is treated with anti-allergy drops. Good hand hygiene and not sharing towels prevent spread.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if symptoms do not improve in a few days, or for any eye infection in a newborn. Seek urgent care for eye pain, sensitivity to light or changes in vision.
