Overview
A corneal ulcer is a medical emergency because it can permanently damage vision if not treated quickly.
Symptoms
- Eye pain and redness
- Feeling that something is in the eye
- Blurred vision
- Watering or discharge
- Sensitivity to light and a white spot on the cornea
Causes and risk factors
Causes include bacterial, fungal, viral or parasitic infections. Contact lens wear, especially sleeping in lenses, eye injuries and dry eyes increase the risk.
Diagnosis
An eye specialist examines the eye with special dye and a microscope, and may take a sample to identify the infection.
Treatment
Treatment is with frequent antibiotic, antifungal or antiviral eye drops. Severe cases may need surgery.
When to see a doctor
Seek urgent eye care for a painful red eye with reduced vision, especially if you wear contact lenses.
