Overview
In craniosynostosis, the skull cannot grow normally, which can change the shape of the head and sometimes raise pressure inside the skull. Surgery is usually needed.
Signs
- An unusual head shape
- A hard ridge along a skull joint
- A soft spot (fontanelle) that closes early or is not felt
- Slow growth of the head
Causes and risk factors
Most cases occur by chance. Some are part of genetic syndromes.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis is based on examination and a CT scan of the skull.
Treatment
Surgery reshapes the skull and allows the brain room to grow. It is usually done in the first year of life. Mild cases may only need monitoring.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if your baby's head shape looks unusual or a ridge is felt on the skull.
