Overview
Crohn's disease causes periods of active symptoms (flares) and periods of remission. Treatment helps control inflammation and prevent complications.
Symptoms
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain and cramping
- Weight loss and tiredness
- Blood in the stool
- Mouth ulcers, fever, or abscesses and fistulas around the anus
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by an abnormal immune response in the gut. A family history, smoking and genetic factors increase the risk.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses blood and stool tests, colonoscopy with biopsies, and MRI or CT scans.
Treatment
Treatment includes medicines to reduce inflammation, immune-modifying drugs and biologic therapies. Stopping smoking and good nutrition are important. Some people need surgery for complications.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor for persistent diarrhoea, abdominal pain, blood in the stool or unexplained weight loss.
