Overview
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type, followed by vascular dementia. Treatment and support can help people live well for longer.
Symptoms
- Memory loss, especially for recent events
- Difficulty with planning, problem-solving or finding words
- Confusion about time or place
- Changes in mood, behaviour or personality
- Difficulty with daily tasks
Causes and risk factors
Causes include Alzheimer's disease, strokes, Lewy body disease and frontotemporal dementia. Risk factors include age, high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, inactivity, hearing loss and social isolation.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis involves a detailed history, memory tests, blood tests to rule out treatable causes and brain imaging.
Treatment
Medicines can help some types of dementia. Controlling blood pressure and diabetes, staying active and social, and support for carers are important parts of care.
When to see a doctor
