Overview
A dental abscess causes severe pain and will not heal without treatment. If untreated, the infection can spread to the jaw and surrounding tissues.
Symptoms
- Severe, throbbing toothache that may spread to the ear, jaw or neck
- Sensitivity to hot or cold
- Pain when chewing
- Swelling of the face or gum
- Fever and a bad taste in the mouth
Causes and risk factors
It is caused by untreated tooth decay, a cracked tooth or gum disease. Poor oral hygiene and a sugary diet increase the risk.
Diagnosis
A dentist examines the tooth and may take an X-ray.
Treatment
Treatment includes draining the pus, root canal treatment to save the tooth or removing the tooth. Antibiotics may be needed if the infection is spreading.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist as soon as possible for a painful tooth or swelling. Seek emergency care for swelling of the face or neck, difficulty swallowing or breathing, or high fever.
