Overview
Dental erosion is different from tooth decay. Acids dissolve the outer surface of the teeth over time. The damage cannot be reversed, but it can be stopped and teeth can be protected.
Symptoms
- Sensitivity to hot, cold or sweet food and drinks
- Yellowish teeth as enamel thins
- Rounded or transparent edges of the teeth
- Small dents on the chewing surfaces
Causes and risk factors
Causes include frequent fizzy drinks, fruit juices and acidic foods, acid reflux, frequent vomiting and dry mouth.
Diagnosis
A dentist diagnoses it during a dental examination.
Treatment
Treatment includes reducing acidic foods and drinks, using fluoride toothpaste, treating reflux and, if needed, bonding, fillings or crowns to protect the teeth.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist if your teeth are becoming sensitive or changing in appearance.
