Overview
Dental injuries range from small chips to teeth being knocked out. Prompt treatment can often save the tooth.
Symptoms
- A rough or sharp edge on a tooth
- Pain when biting or with hot and cold
- A visible crack or missing piece of tooth
- Bleeding from the mouth after an injury
Causes and risk factors
Common causes are falls, sports injuries, road accidents, chewing hard foods or objects, and grinding teeth.
Diagnosis
A dentist examines the tooth and takes X-rays to check the root and surrounding bone.
Treatment
Treatment may include smoothing, bonding, a crown, root canal treatment or, if the tooth cannot be saved, an implant or bridge. A knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be replanted if treated within an hour.
When to see a doctor
See a dentist promptly after a tooth injury. If an adult tooth is knocked out, hold it by the crown, keep it in milk and seek care immediately.
