Overview

Many people have a slightly deviated septum without problems. When it is significant, it can cause a blocked nose and breathing difficulty.

Symptoms

  • A blocked nose, often on one side
  • Frequent nosebleeds
  • Noisy breathing or snoring
  • Repeated sinus infections
  • Facial pain or headache

Causes and risk factors

It may be present from birth or caused by an injury to the nose.

Diagnosis

An ENT specialist examines the inside of the nose, sometimes with a small camera (nasal endoscopy).

Treatment

Medicines such as decongestants and steroid sprays can ease symptoms. Surgery to straighten the septum (septoplasty) is the definitive treatment.

When to see a doctor

See an ENT specialist if a blocked nose affects your breathing or sleep, or you have frequent nosebleeds or sinus infections.
