Overview
Saliva protects the teeth and helps with chewing, swallowing and taste. A long-lasting dry mouth increases the risk of tooth decay and mouth infections.
Symptoms
- A dry, sticky feeling in the mouth
- Difficulty chewing, swallowing or speaking
- Bad breath
- Cracked lips and a dry tongue
- Increased tooth decay
Causes and risk factors
Common causes include many medicines, dehydration, breathing through the mouth, diabetes, Sjögren's syndrome, smoking and radiotherapy to the head and neck.
Diagnosis
A doctor or dentist reviews medicines and examines the mouth. Blood tests may check for underlying conditions.
Treatment
Treatment includes sipping water, sugar-free gum, saliva substitutes, reviewing medicines and good dental care with fluoride.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor or dentist if a dry mouth lasts or affects eating, speaking or your teeth.
