Overview
Dry socket exposes the bone and nerves in the socket, causing severe pain a few days after an extraction. It is treatable and heals with care.
Symptoms
- Severe pain two to four days after an extraction
- Pain spreading to the ear or temple
- An empty-looking socket with visible bone
- Bad breath or an unpleasant taste
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include smoking, difficult extractions such as wisdom teeth, poor oral hygiene, rinsing or spitting forcefully after an extraction and oral contraceptives.
Diagnosis
A dentist diagnoses it by examining the socket.
Treatment
The dentist cleans the socket and places a soothing dressing. Pain relief helps, and symptoms usually settle within a few days.
When to see a doctor
See your dentist if pain gets worse a few days after an extraction instead of improving.
