Overview

Dyslexia is lifelong but does not affect intelligence. With early support, people with dyslexia can succeed at school and work.

Signs

  • Slow or inaccurate reading
  • Poor spelling
  • Difficulty following written instructions
  • Mixing up the order of letters or numbers

Causes and risk factors

It often runs in families and is linked to differences in how the brain processes language.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is made by an educational psychologist or specialist through reading and language assessments. Vision and hearing should be checked.

Treatment

Structured literacy teaching, extra time, technology such as text-to-speech, and emotional support help.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor or school specialist if a child has persistent difficulty with reading and spelling despite good teaching.
