Overview
Dyslipidaemia usually causes no symptoms and is found with a blood test. Managing it lowers the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
Symptoms
- Usually no symptoms
- Sometimes fatty deposits around the eyes or on tendons
- Often found after a heart attack or stroke
Causes and risk factors
Causes include an unhealthy diet high in saturated fat, obesity, inactivity, smoking, diabetes, an underactive thyroid, kidney disease and inherited conditions.
Diagnosis
A lipid profile blood test measures LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Your overall heart risk is assessed.
Treatment
Treatment includes a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, weight loss, stopping smoking and lipid-lowering medicines such as statins when needed.
When to see a doctor
Have your cholesterol checked regularly, especially if you have diabetes, high blood pressure or a family history of heart disease.
