Overview
Most ear infections get better within a few days. Some children have repeated infections that need specialist care.
Symptoms
- Ear pain
- Fever
- Irritability and pulling at the ear in babies
- Reduced hearing
- Discharge from the ear if the eardrum bursts
Causes and risk factors
It often follows a cold or throat infection. Risk factors include young age, daycare, exposure to smoke and bottle-feeding while lying down.
Diagnosis
A doctor examines the eardrum with an otoscope.
Treatment
Pain relief is the main treatment, as many infections clear on their own. Antibiotics are used for some children. Repeated infections or fluid may need grommets.
When to see a doctor
See a doctor if ear pain lasts more than two to three days, or for a baby with fever. Seek urgent care for swelling behind the ear, severe headache, stiff neck or facial weakness.
