Overview

Earwax normally protects the ear and moves out on its own. Sometimes it builds up and blocks the ear.

Symptoms

  • A blocked or full feeling in the ear
  • Reduced hearing
  • Ringing in the ear
  • Earache or itching
  • Dizziness in some cases

Causes and risk factors

Using cotton buds, hearing aids or earplugs can push wax deeper. Narrow or hairy ear canals and older age increase the risk.

Diagnosis

A doctor looks into the ear with an otoscope.

Treatment

Ear drops can soften wax. A doctor can remove wax with gentle irrigation or suction. Avoid using cotton buds in the ear canal.

When to see a doctor

See a doctor if your ears feel blocked or hearing is reduced. Seek care for pain, discharge or bleeding from the ear.
