Overview
Endometrial cancer is often found early because it usually causes abnormal bleeding. When found early, it is often cured with surgery.
Symptoms
- Bleeding after menopause
- Bleeding between periods or very heavy periods
- Unusual vaginal discharge
- Pelvic pain in later stages
Causes and risk factors
Risk factors include obesity, older age, diabetes, never having been pregnant, late menopause, oestrogen-only hormone therapy, polycystic ovary syndrome and some inherited conditions.
Diagnosis
Diagnosis uses a transvaginal ultrasound and a biopsy of the womb lining or hysteroscopy. Scans show whether it has spread.
Treatment
The main treatment is surgery to remove the womb, tubes and ovaries. Radiotherapy, chemotherapy or hormone therapy may also be used.
When to see a doctor
See a gynaecologist for any bleeding after menopause or unusual bleeding.
